Privacy policy
May English helps you practice English with lessons, translations, games, and AI conversation. This page explains the information the app uses.
Information we collect
We keep your name, email address, sign-in information, native language, time zone, assessment results, lesson answers, writing, conversation text and transcripts, scores, and words scheduled for review. Passwords are stored as hashes, not readable passwords. If you use Sign in with Apple, we keep an Apple account identifier and an encrypted authorization token.
How we use it
We use this information to run your account, personalize daily lessons to your level, translate or explain words when you ask, evaluate practice, remember progress, and provide account verification and recovery. We do not sell your information or show ads in the app.
AI and voice practice
Relevant practice text, your level, and language preference are sent to OpenAI to create lessons, translations, feedback, and conversations. If you start a voice conversation, microphone audio is sent to OpenAI for the live conversation. May English stores the resulting text transcript and score, but does not store an audio recording in its account database. Under its standard API settings, OpenAI may keep content in abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days. You can practice other lessons without using the microphone.
Other services
Our hosting provider stores account data. We keep encrypted backups in private cloud storage and on a protected administrator device. An email provider sends verification and password-reset messages. Apple handles Sign in with Apple and TestFlight distribution. These services receive only the information needed for their role.
Storage and deletion
Your progress stays with your account until you delete it. In Settings, you can download your learning record or permanently delete your account. Deletion removes your active account, progress, and sessions. Backup copies are scheduled for deletion after 30 days; a failed backup or cleanup run can delay removal. If Apple token revocation is unavailable when you delete an Apple account, the app explains how to remove May English from apps using your Apple Account.
Security
We use HTTPS for the hosted app, restrict account data to the signed-in learner, hash passwords, and encrypt stored Apple refresh tokens. We limit access to the server and its backups.
